Module 1 - Resume Express

Unit 2: Preparing your resume

Before you start writing your resume it helps to have an idea of the type of job or industry you would like to work in. Sometimes we don't know what we want to do, and spending time doing some self-exploration can help us decide.

This unit will take you through a series of exercises that will help you prepare your resume and help you determine what is important and what is not.

Resumes that are focused on outcomes and achievements are more likely to be short listed by employers than resumes that describe the duties and responsibilities of previous jobs.

Common problems with resumes are:

  • Forgetting potentially impressive achievements
  • Thinking some achievements are not relevant
  • Playing down your achievements
  • Including boring, irrelevant details

Make sure you print these pages or note your answers with pen and paper, before you proceed to the next page. The print icon will appear to remind you. You will find your responses to these exercises will be useful in subsequent units.
