Exploring Job Descriptions

Once you have constructed a list of job titles that interest you and for which you are qualified, it’s a good idea to do some more extensive research on those jobs.

For a start, you could look at the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. This dictionary lists occupations and the types of duties and responsibilities associated with them. However, the descriptions are frequently generic and do not describe the differences in roles across employers or environments (e.g. they do not describe how public relations work might differ in a university, hospital or manufacturing environment). One way of finding additional information is through networking.

You might also explore your local library or the La Trobe University Careers Service. Both maintain small collections of resources on various occupations, which may include information on roles, work conditions, potential salaries and educational requirements.
