Sample Resumes
The following sample resumes have been developed to illustrate the range of resume types that exist. The style, layout, format and content all vary. Have a look at all of them and consider which type of resume best suits your needs. All resumes are in Adobe .pdf format. They need to be downloaded and viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded free from the Adobe website.
- Sample Resume 1. This resume has a functional format. This format is suitable for students with limited work experience. Skills gained through extracurricular activities, volunteer work and course placements are used instead of work experience. If you find that you have limited experiences outside of your course, think of skills that you have exhibited within your course e.g. team projects, essays, thesis, presentations, etc. List the skills relevant to the position on the first page, after the career objective and education sections. List employment experience (which in this example is limited and less relevant to the position) towards the end of the resume.
- Sample Resume 2. This resume is chronological. Within each section, the dates of activities are listed in reverse chronological order. This resume is suitable for a student who has some work experience. The style of the resume highlights for employers the responsibilities, achievements and skills gained through particular work experience and lists additional skills relevant to the key selection criteria of the job.
- Sample Resume 3. This is a combination resume. The resume is easy to read because the layout is clear and uncluttered with lots of white space. Additional sections on volunteer work and academic achievements help to enhance the resume. The skills section can be tailored depending on the selection criteria of the job you are applying for.
- Sample Resume 4. This resume is suitable for part-time work. It is short sharp and to the point. It is tailored to the position and includes responsibilities and achievements under the employment history.
- Sample Resume 5. This is a combination resume. It lists the key skills relevant to the job on the first page but also provides a reverse chronological listing of their education details. For each position in the employment history section, they have listed the responsibilities and achievements for that role. This is a great way to highlight to employers what you have to offer through demonstrated examples.
- Sample Resume 6. This is a combination resume. The resume is written by an education student who is looking for teaching work. The student has limited general work experience, but has completed practical work placements in schools, as part of her course. The resume is written for a non-advertised position with no job description, so the student has developed their own skill headings in their resume. The student can adapt these skill headings, depending on the focus of that particular school. For example, a school may be interested in hiring teachers who can teach students from Non English Speaking backgrounds or they may offer after-school sports. It is important that the student state what skills and experiences they have that address these areas.
