Module 4 - Career Planning

Unit 1: Self-Assessment
How to Conduct Self-Assessment

A group of studentsWe all engage in self-assessment every day: when we start a conversation with a stranger, when we debate an issue with a friend (or enemy!), or when we start a new relationship.

These day-to-day occurences are shaped by way we react to the world, and the way the world reacts to us. When we respond to these interactions, or change because of them, we are learning more about ourselves.

There is, however, a more systematic way to approach self-assessment in relation to employment. Its seven major steps are:

  1. Understanding your personal traits.
  2. Identifying your personal values.
  3. Estimating your economic needs.
  4. Identifying your long-term goals.
  5. Recognising your skill base.
  6. Recognising your preferred skills.
  7. Assessing which skills need further development.

In this unit we will explore each of these steps in more detail. As we do so, you can create a worksheet similar to the one below, thereby chronicling your new self-knowledge!
